Early Childhood Ed series begins
Early Childhood Education is in short supply in Liberal, and a newly formed group seeks to address that challenge. As part of the Southwest Kansas Early Childhood Coalition, Seward County Community College will host the first of four education workshops on campus this week, from 6-8 p.m. Thursday in SU 214. The training session costs $10, and includes dinner and no-cost childcare for those who register in advance (through Wednesday).
The first of four monthly training sessions, Thursday’s session focuses on the importance of care for the caregiver. “Self-Care for Early Childhood Professionals,”presented by Stephanie Keller of a statewide infant-toddler specialist network, offers more than just helpful hints.
“This professional development activity will help you cognitively, physically and emotionally bounce back each day,” organizers stated.
Future workshops will focus on positive parenting, wrestling with safe sleep, and sensory stimulus in infant and toddler environments.
“We want to support early childhood education professionals, whether that takes place in a preschool, daycare, or a more structured organization,” said SCCC B&I Director Norma Jean Dodge. “It’s important work that often goes unrecognized.”
To provide additional support, the coaltion is offering gift cards to help cover gas costs for those who attend from outside Liberal. Participants who attend all four monthly training sessions will receive an early childhood literacy gift set valued at $200. Each training session is approved for credit through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Members of the Southwest Kansas Early Childhood Coalition are Child Care Aware od Kansas, KCCTO-KITS Infant-Toddler Specialist Network, Kansas Children Service League, Liberal Area Coalition for Families, Russell Childhood Development Center, and SCCC.
