Broncbuster men claim Central Kansas Classic; DeSchutter wins individual title

The Broncbuster men's golf team captured both the team and individual titles at the 2022 Central Kansas Classic at Turkey Creek on Tuesday.

As a team, the Broncbusters outpaced the field, finishing 2-under par, 10 strokes ahead of second-place Barton County. Anthony DeSchutter claimed the individual crown at 6-under.

DeSchutter was magnificent, posting three straight rounds of 68. During Tuesday's final 18, he birdied five holes and parred 10. But what made the final round even more special was the fact that the sophomore trailed Barton County's, Otto Heden by four strokes after six holes. DeSchutter responded though and drew even after 14. Heden then double bogeyed 15 while DeSchutter answered with a massive birdie on 17.

"That's as good as I've seen Anthony hit the ball, especially under pressure," Head Coach, Phil Terpstra said. "His focus was fantastic, and that's good to see, especially in a pressure situation."

DeSchutter had five birdies in round two and was 3-under through nine.

Akarachai Sakunlee tied for fifth at 4-over, which included a sensational 1-under, 69 in Monday's opening round. In fact, he birdied the final two holes, a par-4 and a par-5, that consisted of 505 yards of treacherous terrain.

Teammates Jacob Granmark and Joshua Balson-Scales tied for eighth at 5-over. Balson-Scales posted the second lowest score of the tournament with a 66 in round two. He birdied five holes and bogeyed only once, firing a 3-under on the backside.

Tiaan Diedericks was 11th at 6-over and Garden City native Jackson Koksal was 42nd.

"This was the first tournament for three of our guys, so there were some nerves," Terpstra added. "Overall, I saw good stuff. We had way too many double and triple bogeys, but we birdied enough to offset that. If we can clean up the big holes, we will be even better."
