Online student earns state honor for MLT

Not all Seward County Community College graduates finish their studies in Kansas — but all of them are part of the Saints family. Catherine (Cat) Sibley is an example. She is also the winner of the The 2022 Kansas outstanding student award from the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.

An Oregon resident, Sibley earned her associate degree of applied science degree in medical laboratory technology in summer 2022.  She sought her AAS degree from SCCC because of the online program format.  She was able to remain in her geographic region and work part time while completing the course requirements for the MLT program.

“Catherine has demonstrated the ability to balance work, school, and family responsibilities. She is truly fascinated by the medical laboratory science field,” said Dr. Suzanne Campbell, SCCC Dean of Allied Health and director of the Medical Laboratory Technology program. “We congratulate her on winning this award.”

Annually, the ASCLS-Kansasociety recognizes one outstanding student from each Kansas medical laboratory science and medical laboratory technology (MLT) program.  Sibley was nominated by Campbell, who wrote that Sibley’s commitment to learning and successful completion of all course requirements in exemplary fashion.

“Catherine has work experience in the laboratory as a phlebotomist/laboratory assistant.   Her hands-on experience has provided a solid foundation of knowledge from which she has built upon to move forward with the theoretical aspect of medical laboratory science,” Campbell said. “I am confident she will demonstrate competency as an entry level MLT.”
