Men's Basketball Falls in Overtime Thriller in Season Opener at #3 Indian Hills

Dodge City men's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a top tier matchup on the road facing off with #3 Indian Hills in a battle between a pair of National Tournament teams from last year.

The revamped Conquistadors would give the Warriors all they could handle and lead a good portion of the game but ultimately fell 88-87 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer in overtime.

The Conqs would jump up early 4-1 in a first half that neither team was able to set a solid pace too. First half would feature leads for both teams no larger than four at any certain time and would be back-and-forth throughout on the way to a 35-34 lead for Indian Hills at halftime. The second half would be much of the same with teams trading blows back-and-forth and each owning a lead, but the Conqs put together a 6-0 run with just over eight minutes left and had a solid lead and would carry a six-point lead into the final two minutes of the contest. In final minute of regulation, the Conqs saw Indian Hills tie the contest and then in the final seconds of regulation the Warriors were unable to get a shot off and the game pushed into overtime.

In overtime each team would hold the lead again until the Conqs went up 82-78 on a DJ Jones layup and then continued to hold the lead. In the final seconds of the contest the Conqs made one of two free throws to lead 87-85 with only three seconds remaining. Indian Hills rushed down the floor hoisted a three-pointer and drained the game-winning shot to end the game at 88-87.

The Conqs in the loss shot 40.6% from the floor while Indian Hills shot 47.4% in the contest. Conqs would go 30-44 from the free throw line as the game featured 78 total free throws.

Jones led the Conqs with a huge 31-point performance on 9-14 shooting and 11-14 from the free throw line, while Cam Malray added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Robinson contributed 14 points and three assists.

Conqs are back in action in their home opener on Tuesday, November 8th at 7:00 pm against McCook.
