GCCCA Sees Success with Thanksgiving Literacy Event

The Garden City Career Connection Academy (GCCCA) held a Thanksgiving meal and family literacy activity on Thursday, November 17th, 2022.

Nearly 150 students and their family members ate a traditional Thanksgiving meal supplemented by the students' favorite dishes from home. Food from Mexico, Burma, and Somalia, among others, embellished the turkey, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

Before the meal, there was a special musical presentation by Rosie Horney followed by a short presentation introducing students to the story of the first Thanksgiving. After the meal, students shared what they were thankful for and families wrote their ideas on Autumn-colored leaves, which compose a fall tree on the wall of the Career Connection Academy.

Cary Conley, Director of the Career Connection Academy, stated, "I am thankful for the ability to share history and culture with so many students from different backgrounds. In an era when incivility towards others seems to be the norm, it was touching to see people from a variety of cultures come together in such a positive manner."

The Career Connection Academy offers courses in citizenship, General Educational Diploma (GED), and English as a Second Language (ESL). The Academy begins enrolling for the January session on Monday, November 28th, 2022. For more information, please call 620-276-7600.
