Women's Basketball Wins Top 25 Road Tussle With Butler

The Dodge City women's basketball team hit the road for the last time before Christmas break and picked up their second Top 25 win under Head Coach, Landon Steele beating #23 Butler 69-63.

The win moves the Conquistadors to 10-2 on the season and 5-1 in the KJCCCC, while marking the third straight win in the series against Butler. The Conqs started the winning streak last year against Butler snapping an 8-game losing streak in the process.

It was a slow start to the contest for both teams in El Dorado as the game was tied at 8-8 with just over four and half minutes left in the first quarter and would be even at 13-13 at the end of the first stanza. In the second quarter the Conqs made a push to take control working to a 22-15 lead the largest advantage of the night to that point and even got the lead to double figures at 30-20 with a minute and half left in the first half. The Conqs ultimately carried a 32-23 advantage into halftime holding Butler to just 28.1% shooting in the first half. The third quarter say the lead go back to double digits and grow as the Conqs outscored Butler 23-17 in the frame. Ultimately the lead made its way to as high as 19 points in the second half but Butler didn't go away chipping away at the lead to dwindle it down to single digits late. The Conqs got a big three-pointer by Bree Stephens to push the lead back to seven with just under a minute left and then free throws secured the game at 69-63 for the Conqs.

Conqs despite shooting just 35.5% from the floor capitalized on free throws going 17-22 from the line and outdueled the Grizzles in other ways to secure the win.

Jada Burton paced the Conqs with 15 points on 6-11 shooting adding four assists and two rebounds, while Stephens chipped in 14 points and Paris Santacaterina tallied 10 points. Leah Mafua and Shakara Anderson each added eight points and Anderson grabbed nine rebounds.

Up next the Conqs welcome Hutchinson to town on Saturday, December 10th at 1:00 pm and then will host Cloud County on Monday, December 12th at 5:30 pm.
