Dodge City men's basketball continue to be tested in the KJCCC as they took on Barton on the road to wrap up the first go around in the KJCCC schedule and fell on a buzzer-beating three-pointer, 76-73.
The loss moves the #8 Conquistadors to 14-4 on the season and 10-2 in KJCCC play. Despite the loss the Conqs remain in first place and still own a two-game lead in the standings.
After back-and-forth early the Conqs saw Barton put together a 13-4 run to lead 19-11 midway through the first half. The Conqs would hang tough and fight back drawing to within one with 4:48 remaining in the half but Barton continued to hold the Conqs at bay and carried a 37-34 advantage into halftime. The second half would be much of the same as both teams traded opportunities and buckets and the Conqs managed to tie the game up at 49-49 with 12:21 left and snatched their first lead of the second half on a Tuscan Onouha layup with 9:37 remaining making it 56-55. Down the stretch it was tight as DJ Jones would tie the game up at 73-73 late with a layup and then the Conqs got the ball back with 22.1 seconds remaining. Looking for perhaps the final shot the Conqs got fouled and Jones stepped to the free throw line but misfired on both and Barton took the ball down the floor and in the final seconds snuck a top of the key three-pointer at the buzzer to take the game 76-73.
The Conqs in the loss shot 46.7% from the floor and would out rebound the Cougars 40-37 but had 20 turnovers, while both teams shot under 67% from the free throw line.
Jason Edwards paced the Conqs with 26 points and five rebounds, while Jones added 12 points and Chris Robinson finished with 10 points. Both Cam Malray and Jacobi Sebock finished with eight points each, as Malray added seven rebounds and Sebock finished with nine rebounds.
The Conqs are off now for a week until they are back in action on Saturday, January 21st when they host Cowley at 3:00 pm.
