Women’s Basketball Claims Win in Great Bend for First Time Since 2002 in Top KJCCC Battle

Dodge City women’s basketball closed out the first time through the KJCCC slate with a tough road win over Barton 79-65, claiming the first win in Great Bend since 2002.

The win moves the #13 Conquistadors to 16-2 on the season and 11-1 in KJCCC play as the Conqs have now won nine straight. Conqs to the day beat the Cougars at Great Bend for the first time since 2002 having beaten them on January 14th that year, and marks only the third win at Great Bend for the Conqs in program history. The win also gives the Conqs a two-game lead in the KJCCC standings as they continue to sit in first place.

Barton opened the game taking the lead early going up 8-5 but the Conqs would push back and by the end of the first quarter would hold a 20-19 lead. The Conqs were cooking early in the second quarter as Bree Stephens drained back-to-back three-pointers and the Conqs grew their lead by the media timeout, the Conqs led 36-28 outscoring Barton 16-9 to that point in the second quarter. The hot shooting continued in the second quarter as the Conqs finished the stanza shooting 11-15 (73.3%) and outscored Barton 27-15 to lead 47-34 at halftime. The start of the second half saw a slow start for the Conqs to get going again as Barton chipped at the lead drawing within six points at 51-45 with 2:44 left in the third. The Conqs however would finish the third quarter strong with an 8-0 run and led 59-45. The Conqs would go on to handle Barton through the fourth quarter and secure the road win 79-65.

Conqs finished the night shooting 52.5% from the floor and hit nine three-pointers while also taking care of the ball having just 11 turnovers.

Leah Mafua led the Conqs with 17 points on 7-13 shooting adding five rebounds, while Stephens added 16 points going 4-7 from three-point range and added six rebounds. Jada Burton chipped in 14 points with seven assists, while Paris Santacaterina added 10 points. Hanna Miller tallied a career-high eight points.
